Journey to Excellence: Bridging Worlds in Sports Medicine

It has been a while since I was in london last. It was for my graduation ceremony from University College London (UCL). The day was as you’d picture it, and more so similar to what I had seen on the silver screen so often in Hollywood movies. This also happened to be in the smack middle of my fellowship with my mentor Dr. Sachin Tapasvi Sir. And that’s where this story really begins.

I have been, for a while seeking out the best possible way to introduce and conduct Sports medicine in India as I learnt at the Institute I studied, Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) on the famous Tottenham Court Road, London. Most may be familiar with the field but often so it’s a challenging concept to grasp and even harder to pursue. The key to which is the inter-disciplinary work amongst different faculties of sports medicine.

I had the fortune of meeting Dr. Andy Williams at the famous Pune Knee Course (PKC) 2023, where I was volunteering as the past fellow. Mr. Andy Williams, Who you may not know is the surgeon who was nominated by ‘the times’ in 2011 as one of the top 100 orthopedic surgeons in Britain and is famously known for saving the knee of Ben Stokes, the now England Cricket Team captain, Andrew Flintoff, Shoaib Akhtar and the likes of famous footballers like Virgil Van Dyk (Liverpool FC), John Terry (Chelsea FC). Pune Knee Course in my small, measured experience of Indian conferences, is a meeting I believe, the epitome of how a conference must conduct scientifically. And is also the brainchild of Dr. Sachin Tapasvi Sir. I had but a brief conversation with Mr. Andy Williams about what I am pursuing.

The concept or the idea of I-SPORT Medical centre (Integrated- Sport Performance, Orthopedics, and Rehabilitation team) was not yet fully formed then but the precursors were. As any young surgeon would do, I was seeking to understand how great surgeons think and function. And the natural course of action was to speak with Dr. Andy Williams and see if he would allow me to spend time observing him.

I had a brief period of month before I got response in June 2023 from the team at the Fortius clinic. I was given the opportunity to spend two weeks with him, a good year later. The opportunity meant I was going back to London. In the meantime over the last 8 months, I have managed to set up I-SPORT Medical Centre, at Pune Balewadi. It’s a hospital dedicated to Sports medicine, orthopaedics and rehabilitation under one roof. I believe this is a first effort on an individual level to bring sports medicine together.

What I hope to learn at Fortius Clinic as young surgeon and a founder, is to understand how to scientifically approach the Sports injuries and advanced orthopedics differently than what we see today here in India.
